ABATTOIR – Vicious Attack review

 ABATTOIR – Vicious Attack
Marquee Records
The 80’s is an era that has marked the heavy metal sound, since most of the genres we know now were formed back then. In the mid 80’s there were bands that wanted to play loud and fast without being categorized as thrash metal. I think that this is how the speed metal sound was formed and here I have for you a perfect representative of this sound.
THE COVER: On the cover you can see a man’s hands with a tattoo which has the word maniac (like the secondary title of the song “Vicious Attack”) holding a knife and a hook and grabbing his victim who is a woman. The cover could really be a poster of a horror film which would have as a main character a serial killer, but also fits to the band’s lyrics and its music too.
MUSICAL STYLE: ABBATOIR definitely belong to what we call speed metal sound. This means that you will listen to up tempo songs with fast leads and catchy melodies that owe a lot both to IRON MAIDEN and JUDAS PRIEST. The element that makes ABATTOIR stand out is that they manage to sound both aggressive and yet melodic. It is the kind of release that a fan of band’s like SAVAGE GRACE, EXCITER, METALLICA of the first album and HALLOWS EVE would appreciate. This album was released back in the 80’s, but believe me when I say that it still sounds as if it was first released in our present days. It is dynamic, melodic and catchy as hell.
CONCLUSION: It is nice to see that labels like Marquee Records give the chance to both old and new fans to add to their collection such a release like “Vicious Attack”. An album that comes from the 80’s with compositions that can easily be characterized as classic for the speed metal sound.
