RIPPER - Third Witness review

RIPPER - Third Witness
Black Widow Records
Ripper is a great name for a heavy metal band, don’t you agree? It sounds violent and sinister and if you manage to make your music sound like this then you probably have chosen the right name.  RIPPER comes from the U.S.A. and their story goes back in 1977. They split up in 1990 and they reformed in 2005. During their career they have released 3 full length albums and the third one is the release that I will present to you here.
THE COVER: The cover of the album looks like a painting that comes from the 17th or 18th century. It depicts a court of justice where there are many people gathered to watch a trial and in the center of it you can see a woman testifying and showing a person on the right corner. Probably she is the third witness. The cover is full of colors and details and also travels you in a way back in time.
MUSICAL STYLE: RIPPER with their third album continues on the musical path that they have set from their debut album which is no other than traditional heavy metal. In the new release you will have the opportunity to listen to 7 original compositions and one cover of BLACK SABBATH’s “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath”. Their style can be described as mid paced heavy metal with some doom riffs. Actually to my ears they sounded as a crossover between early JUDAS PRIEST (“Sad Wings of Destiny” era) and BLACK SABBATH. They of course give their own personal touch to their compositions and above all they manage to create a sound that is rooted in the late 70’s and early 80’s, but yet it is fresh and contemporary.
CONCLUSION: Who doesn’t like a band that takes the essence of JUDAS PRIEST and BLACK SABBATH and forms compositions that are catchy and well orchestrated? So, if you want to listen to some good old school metal with fresh ideas, then this one is a very good choice for you.
