EUROPE, Wings Of Tomorrow (1984)

Το επόμενο λιθαράκι.

Οι νεαροί τότε πιτσιρικάδες από τη Σουηδία που με το ομώνυμο ντεμπούτο τους πριν ήρθαν και τάραξαν τα νερά στην κυρίως Ευρωπαϊκή Hard and Heavy σκηνή, συνεχίζουν ακάθεκτοι στο δεύτερο αυτό άλμπουμ της ανομοιογενούς καριέρας τους. Τώρα να ξεκαθαρίσει κάτι που είναι σαν λεκές στην ιστορία τους. Ως εδώ στα δύο άλμπουμ τους έχουμε οριακά αυτό που σε μία δεκαετία θα είναι ο ορισμός του Euro Power Metal, μάλιστα μη ξεχνάμε ότι ακριβώς έντεκα χρόνια στο μέλλον οι Φινλανδοί Stratovarius θα έχουν στο άλμπουμ τους Dreamspace τραγούδι με τίτλο Wings of Tomorrow (παρεμπιπτόντως ο Timmo Tolkki έχει πραγματικά κατακλέψει τον John Norum κιθαριστικά πολλές φορές!) αποτίνοντας φόρο τιμής στους εξ Εσπερία γείτονες Σουηδούς. Οπότε οι κύριοι Joey Tempest στη φωνή (πριν εξελιχθεί εντελώς στο αρσενικό πρότυπο frontman που θα κάνει κάθε κοπελίτσα στα 80s να έρχεται σε οργασμική προδιάθεση), ο μεγάλος John Norum στην κιθάρα, John Levén μπάσο κι ο Tony Reno ντραμς σε μερικά κομμάτια πολύ πιο τσαμπουκαλεμένα σε σχέση με το μέλλον τους αφου το The Final Countdown του '86 θα τους κάνει Hair Metal σχήμα. Οπότε, Stormwind, Scream of Anger, το ωραίο μπαλαντοειδές Open Your Heart, Treated Bad Again, το κλασικό ορχηστρικό Aphasia, το ομώνυμο του δίσκου Wings of Tomorrow, Wasted Time, Lying Eyes αλλά και η δακρύβρεχτη μπαλάντα Dreamer είναι τα γνωστότερα απ' αυτόν το δίσκο. Βέβαια η λακ στο μαλλί καραδοκεί  και φυσικά όπως τα περισσότερα δεινά τόσο στη μουσική όσο και γενικότερα έρχονται απ' την αντίπερα όχθη του Ατλαντικού.

The Next Milestone

The young kids from Sweden, who with their eponymous debut came and stirred the waters of the primarily European Hard and Heavy scene, continue unabated with this second album of their varied career. Let's clarify something that stains their history. Up to this point, with their two albums, we have what will, in a decade, become the definition of Euro Power Metal. Let's not forget that exactly eleven years into the future, the Finnish band Stratovarius will have a song titled "Wings of Tomorrow" on their album Dreamspace (by the way, Timo Tolkki has shamelessly copied John Norum's guitar style many times!) paying homage to their Swedish neighbors.

So, Joey Tempest on vocals (before he fully evolved into the male frontman model that would make every girl in the '80s swoon), the great John Norum on guitar, John Levén on bass, and Tony Reno on drums deliver some tracks that are much tougher compared to their future works, as 'The Final Countdown' of '86 will turn them into a Hair Metal band. Therefore, "Stormwind," "Scream of Anger," the beautiful ballad-like "Open Your Heart," "Treated Bad Again," the classic instrumental "Aphasia," the title track "Wings of Tomorrow," "Wasted Time," "Lying Eyes," and the tearful ballad "Dreamer" are the most well-known from this album. Of course, the hairspray is lurking, and naturally, like most calamities both in music and generally, they come from across the Atlantic.
