CUSTARD – A Realm of Tales Review

CUSTARD – A Realm of Tales
Pure Steel Records
Ah… CUSTARD!! This is a band that I have followed since their first EP (which is great by the way). CUSTARD is one of these bands that exists for so many years and they never went astray from their sound. They really do love what they do, because first of all they are metal fans and of course good musicians. In all these years of their existence they have released some nice albums (some of them are really rare and the guys should consider reprinting them) and I am really curious to know why this band never received the attention they deserved in the heavy/power metal sound.

“A Realm of Tales” is their sixth full length release and once again CUSTARD offer us an album that includes 12 (2 of them are intros) compositions of traditional heavy/power metal that is mostly inspired by the late 80’s German power metal scene. It is a release that surely has variety and catchy melodies and of course riffs in the way that old school metal heads love to listen to. So in this album you can listen to straight heavy metal songs that pay tribute to bands like ACCEPT and JUDAS PRIEST, classic power metal anthems that remind us of early HELLOWEEN and some folkish power metal tunes that BLIND GUARDIAN and FALCONER fans will enjoy. All these are given under the personal touch of CUSTARD.

Lyrically the songs move on the world of fairytales as you can understand from the titles of the songs and I think that this is something that fits perfectly to the band’s sound and before you say something negative about that, just remember that some of these fairytales can teach us some great things even now.
Al in all CUSTARD with “Realm of Tales” wanted to create and offer us a traditional heavy/power metal album that is inspired by the 80’s (actually the band was formed in 1987) with a contemporary and fresh touch and I think that they have done a very good job.
