VIRGIN STEELE, Life Among The Ruins (1993)

Τώρα αν δείτε την εξωφυλλάρα μόνο σίγουρα θα σκεφτείτε "τί επικός δίσκαρος είναι!" Αμ δε.... μετά τα σερί επιτυχιών με το σπαθί στο χέρι απ' το Virgin Steele I, Guardians of the Flame διαμέσου του Noble Savage ως το καρα-έπος Age of Concent ναι, η επική βαρβαρική-ρομαντική μουσική (κατά DeFeis) είναι αυτό που ψάχνετε. Εδώ, εδώ...οι Led Zeppelin συναντάνε τους Whitesnake διαμέσου Scorpions στο σώμα των Manowar της μετά  1987 περιόδου. Μπερδέψανε κοινώς τα πράγματα. ΟΚ να το πω αλλιώς, μην ακούσετε πρώτη φορά αυτό το άλμπουμ γιατί θα σας φανούν τα προηγούμενα (και ευτυχώς και τα επόμενα μετά, τα δύο θεϊκά Marriage of Heaven and Hell) παρα πολύ βαριά! Όχι δεν είναι οι V.S. αυτοί που ξέραμε εδώ. Όσο κι αν μου αρέσουν τα Hard Rock μεγαθήρια στα οποία αποτίνουν φόρο τιμής με αυτό το άλμπουμ, τόσο δε μου αρέσουν οι προσμίξεις. Blues, Rock, μπαλάντες με πολύ έρωτα και κλάμα δεν είναι ακριβώς αυτό που θέλει ο αιματοβαμμένος οπαδός τους! David DeFeis φωνή και πλήκτρα, Edward Purshino κιθάρα, Rob DeMartino μπάσο, Joey Ayvazian ντραμς και στα δεκατέσσερα κομμάτια του συγκεκριμένου ξεχωρίζουν, τέσσερα, βία πέντε Jet Black, Love is Pain, I Dress in Black, Crown of Thorns...αυτά  δυστυχώς. Άγνωσται αί βουλαί του DeFeis! Πάντως το overcorrection των δύο Marriage έρχεται κι είναι διπλό και όχι μόνο θα στρώσει τα πράγματα αλλά θα τα ισοπεδώσει.

Cultural Shock

Now, if you just look at the amazing cover, you might think, "What an epic album this must be!" Well, not quite... After a series of triumphs with the sword-wielding glory of *Virgin Steele I* and *Guardians of the Flame*, through to the masterpiece *Noble Savage* and the epic *Age of Consent*, yes, epic barbaric-romantic music (as DeFeis would describe it) is exactly what you're looking for. But here... here, Led Zeppelin meets Whitesnake via Scorpions, all wrapped up in the body of post-1987 Manowar. In other words, things got a bit mixed up. OK, let me put it another way: don't listen to this album as your first introduction to the band, because it will make the previous albums (and thankfully the next two divine *Marriage of Heaven and Hell* albums) seem way too heavy! This is not the Virgin Steele we knew. As much as I love the Hard Rock giants they pay homage to with this album, I don't love the blend. Blues, rock, ballads with lots of love and tears are not exactly what the bloodthirsty fan wants! David DeFeis on vocals and keyboards, Edward Pursino on guitar, Rob DeMartino on bass, and Joey Ayvazian on drums – out of the fourteen tracks on this album, only four, maybe five, stand out: *Jet Black*, *Love is Pain*, *I Dress in Black*, and *Crown of Thorns*... unfortunately, that's it. The ways of DeFeis are mysterious! However, the overcorrection with the two *Marriage* albums is coming, and it's not only double but will also set things straight and utterly level the ground.
