Πρώτο κύμα αυτοί, οι Venom κι οι Hellhammer

Black Metal: Παραγωγή χειρότερη απ 'το  να γράφεις σε μονοφωνικό κασετόφωνο, ασπρόμαυρο μινιμαλιστικό εξώφυλλο, αποκρυφισμός θεματολογικά, πεντάλφες κι ανεστραμμένοι μεταλλικοί σταυροί, δερμάτινα ρούχα με καρφιά, βαμμένη μούρη άσπρη σαν να ψοφησες πριν ένα τέταρτο, γίδια, τράγοι κι άλλα συναφή ζώα... Όλα αυτά -με εξαίρεση το βάψιμο- τα είχε το πρώτο άλμπουμ των Bathory ή αλλιώς της one man  band του κυρίου ημών και υμών Quorthon. Dark Thrash Metal  το έλεγε, γιατί δεν ήθελε να παραδεχτεί ότι πρώτα οι Άγγλοι Venom είχαν δίσκο και τραγούδι με τίτλο Black Metal!!!  Πραγματικά επιδραστικο κυρίως καμία πεντάρα χρόνια μετά για το 2ο κύμα που ξεκίνησε στη Νορβηγία, πάντως προτιμώ πιο πολύ το επόμενο άλμπουμ για αρκετούς λόγους, το The Return...

In the initial surge of musical innovation, luminaries such as Venom and Hellhammer graced the scene with their presence. Black Metal, a genre that seemingly reveled in lo-fi production akin to a monophonic cassette recorder, boasted provocative aesthetics—a black-and-white minimalist album cover, thematic elements steeped in the occult, and symbolic imagery featuring pentagrams and inverted metal crosses. Clad in leather attire adorned with menacing spikes, visages painted a deathly white, reminiscent of one's countenance post-mortem, and evocative portrayals of goats, rams, and other arcane creatures—all these elements coalesced in the inaugural album of Bathory. This masterpiece, orchestrated by the enigmatic Quorthon as a one-man band, was aptly christened Dark Thrash Metal. Noteworthy is Quorthon's intriguing reluctance to concede the chronological precedence of the English pioneers, Venom, who had previously released an album and a track both bearing the title "Black Metal."

Undoubtedly, the first wave left an indelible mark on the musical landscape, setting the stage for a seismic shift approximately five years later—the advent of the second wave, notably in Norway. Despite this historical significance, my personal proclivity inclines towards the subsequent opus, "The Return," for a myriad of reasons, marking a zenith in artistic evolution within the realms of Black Metal.
