1. Could you share insights about your initial involvement with heavy metal music, particularly your early days as a member of the band Kokkalo? What were some memorable experiences and challenges you faced during that period?

During that period, my foray into music began in 1998 when I picked up the guitar. One of the notable challenges was starting at a relatively advanced age, 28, and having to absorb a multitude of musical concepts simultaneously. Having been friends with the musicians at Kokkalo for quite some time proved to be serendipitous. They approached me to handle the orchestration of the band, and in 2002, we collectively took the stage for our inaugural live performance. The indelible memories of that first live show remain vivid, especially the unparalleled excitement of stepping onto the stage amidst the delightful chaos unfolding below.

Ελληνική μετάφραση: Εκείνη η περίοδο ήταν που ξεκίνησα την μουσική. Άρχισα παίζω κιθάρα από 1998. Η πρόκληση ήταν ότι ξεκίνησα σε μεγάλη ηλικία (28) και ότι έπρεπε να μάθω πολλά πράγματα μαζί. Γνώριζα τα παιδιά που έπαιζαν στους Κόκκαλο μιας και ήμασταν φίλοι από παλιά. Μου ζήτησαν να κάνω την ενορχήστρωση της μπάντας και έτσι το 2002 δώσαμε και το πρώτο live της ζωής μας. Αξέχαστες εμπειρίες όταν ανεβαίνεις για πρώτη φορά στην σκηνή και από κάτω να γίνεται χαμός.

2. The name Kokkalo (bone) seems to align more with the vibe of a punk rock band, at least in my opinion. Can you shed some light on how you came to choose this name and what significance or meaning it holds for the band?

Try not to dwell on it too heavily. During that period, excessive drinking was a common occurrence for us. Nearly every day, we found ourselves at the place we fondly referred to as "kokkalo," and it was from those moments that the name originated.

Ελληνική μετάφραση: Προσπάθησε να μην το ψάχνεις πολύ. Πίναμε πολύ εκείνη την περίοδο. Σχεδόν κάθε μέρα ήμασταν "κοκκάλο" και από κει προήλθε και το όνομα.

3. What inspired the formation of the band WARSHIP, and how did you decide on the name?

When Kokkalo disbanded, I made the decision to establish Warship. The name is a reflection of my passion for both heavy metal music and the sea. Drawing from my experience working on fishing boats and feeling the connection with the sea ingrained in my skin, I chose the name Warship as a synthesis of the elemental forces of the sea and the robustness of metal music.

Ελληνική μετάφραση: Όταν σταμάτησαν οι Κόκκαλο πήρα την απόφαση να δημιουργήσω τους Warship. Το     όνομα βγήκε από την αγάπη που είχα για την heavy metal μουσική και την θάλασσα. Παλιότερα δούλευα σε αλιευτικά και έχω την θάλασσα στο πετσί μου. Έτσι λοιπόν διάλεξα το Warship έναν συνδυασμό θάλασσας και μετάλλου.

4. How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?

Old School Heavy Metal.

5. What sub-genres of heavy metal do you feel most influenced by, and how do you incorporate those influences into your music?

We draw our inspiration from the classic Heavy Metal sound, with a particular emphasis on the vibrant era of the 80s, which we consider the pinnacle. Our influences stem from various schools of that time, be it English, German, or American. The assimilation of these influences happens organically – as we play, Heavy Metal music effortlessly emanates from our sound.

Ελληνική μετάφραση: Είμαστε επηρεασμένοι από το κλασικό Heavy Metal  ήχο. Η δεκαετία του 80 ήταν η καλύτερη και από εκεί έχουμε και τις επιρροές μας. Όλες οι σχόλες εκείνης της εποχής (Αγγλική, Γερμανική, Αμερικάνικη) ήταν αυτές οι οποίες μας επηρέασαν περισσότερο. Η ενσωμάτωση γίνεται αυτόματα. Παίζουμε και βγαίνει Heavy Metal μουσική!

6. How do you come up with the themes and lyrics for your songs?

We derive our thematic inspiration directly from life itself. I  firmly believe that life serves as an immense reservoir of inspiration, offering a rich tapestry of themes. Nature, historical events, and the experiences of our own lives collectively form a vast and diverse spectrum of inspiration for us.

Ελληνική μετάφραση: Τα θέματα τα διαλέγουμε μέσα από την ίδια ζωή. Πιστεύω ότι είναι μια τεράστια δεξαμενή έμπνευσης. Η φύση, τα ιστορικά γεγονότα αλλά και η ίδια μας η ζωή που ζούμε είναι μια τεράστια γκάμα έμπνευσης.

7. Maintaining a band like WARSHIP for over two decades is a significant accomplishment. What inspired you to sustain the band's longevity, and were there challenging moments that almost led to its discontinuation? What motivated you to persevere during those darker times and continue the musical journey?

Indeed, in my life, this has been the greatest challenge. If I were to elaborate on the extensive efforts I've undertaken to sustain this band, it would fill the pages of a book. My profound affection for this band stands as my greatest love. It is through the formidable forces of love and passion that one can accomplish feats that exceed personal limits. For me, music is akin to the sea, a constant reminder of its vastness and depth. Given my enduring love for travel, being a part of this musical journey feels like the most rewarding expedition I've ever embarked upon.

Ελληνική μετάφραση: Πράγματι στην ζωή μου αυτό ήταν και η μεγαλύτερη πρόκληση. Αν σου έγραφα αναλυτικά τι έχω κάνει για να διατηρήσω αυτήν την μπάντα ζωντανή θα έγραφα βιβλίο. Η μεγαλύτερη αγάπη μου είναι αυτή η μπάντα. Μόνο με την δύναμη της αγάπης και το πάθος μπορείς να κάνεις πράγματα που σε ξεπερνάνε. Η μουσική μου θυμίζει την θάλασσα. Μου άρεσε πάντα να ταξιδεύω και αυτό είναι το πιο ωραίο ταξίδι.

8. Despite having a two-decade-long tenure and three studio albums under your belt, it seems that the press, particularly in Greece, may not have given you the attention you rightfully deserve. What factors do you believe contributed to this and how do you navigate or address the challenges of gaining recognition in the media?

The band hasn't received as much attention as it deserves. It's evident that their focus lies more on promoting bands that don't align with the essence of Metal music. It seems they have preferences that steer away from supporting pure Heavy Metal acts. Despite these challenges, we remain steadfast in our pursuit. Leveraging the power of the Internet and the insights gained from digital marketing courses, I personally undertake promotional efforts for the band. We make it a point to perform live wherever opportunities arise, and collectively, these endeavors contribute significantly to the band's visibility and promotion.

Ελληνική μετάφραση: Πράγματι δεν έχουν δώσει και τόση προσοχή στην μπάντα. Βλέπω ότι ασχολούνται με μπάντες οι οποίες δεν έχουν να προσφέρουν τίποτα στην Metal μουσική. Προφανώς θέλουν να προωθήσουν κάποιες άλλες μπάντες για το ένα ή τον άλλο λόγο για αυτό δεν ασχολούνται με μπάντες οι οποίες παίζουν αγνό Heavy Metal. Πάντως εμείς δεν πρόκειται να σταματήσουμε ποτέ. Χάρις στο Internet και κάποια μαθήματα digital marketing κάνω και την προώθηση της μπάντας. Επίσης παίζουμε live όπου μπορούμε και όλα αυτά συμβάλουν στην διαφήμιση της μπάντας.

9. With the recent release of your third album, 'Third Wave,' how do you reflect on its completion, and what emotions does it evoke for you? Additionally, could you share the significance that 'Third Wave' holds in your musical journey and personal experience?

Fifteen years ago, I shared my ambition with friends: to create a musical trilogy. Today, that vision has become a reality. The emotions surrounding this achievement are plentiful, evoking memories of the journey from where I began to where I stand now. As a band, we've reached a state of completeness. Personally, realizing this goal took me 13 years, but the fulfillment of the objective is what truly matters.

Ελληνική μετάφραση: Πριν από 15 χρόνια έλεγα στους φίλους μου ότι θέλω να βγάλω μια μουσική τριλογία. Να που έγινε πραγματικότητα. Τα συναισθήματα είναι πολλά και στην σκέψη μου φέρνουν αναμνήσεις από που ξεκίνησα και που έφτασα. Τώρα έχουμε ολοκληρωθεί σαν μπάντα. Προσωπικά έχω πετύχει έναν στόχο ο οποίος μου πήρε 13 χρόνια να τον ολοκληρώσω. Αλλά τα κατάφερα και αυτό έχει σημασία.

10.  I noticed that some songs from your new album were also present in your initial demos. What led you to include these particular tracks in the latest release, and could you elaborate on any significant changes or evolution these songs have undergone since their first rendition?

The original demo songs possessed genuine quality, although the performance and production may not have done justice to their potential. With "Third Wave," we seized the opportunity to showcase these tracks in a more refined light. I trust you'll appreciate them, as these songs carry a meaningful message worth sharing.

Ελληνική μετάφραση: Τα τραγούδια που υπήρχαν στα αρχικά demo ήταν πολύ καλά. Απλά η εκτέλεση και η παραγωγή δεν ήταν τόσο καλή. Οπότε βρήκαμε την ευκαιρία να τα παρουσιάσουμε με το “Third Wave”. Ελπίζω να σας αρέσουν γιατί αυτά τα τραγούδια έχουν κάτι να πουν.

11. How do you come up with the themes and lyrics for your songs?

As mentioned earlier, inspiration comes from life itself. Typically, I discover the melody first, and from there, I craft the lyrics. The essence of these lyrics is rooted in events that leave a lasting impact on me, whether positive or negative.

Ελληνική μετάφραση: Όπως προανέφερα έρχονται μέσα από την ζωή. Για αρχή βρίσκω την μελωδία και από εκεί και έπειτα γράφω και τους στίχους. Είναι στην ουσία τα γεγονότα που μπορούν να με σημαδέψουν είτε αρνητικά είτε θετικά.

12. What can fans expect from one of your live shows?

That we will give 100% of ourselves. We really love what we do and when we're on stage everyone will see what that means. For us this music is our very life.

Ελληνική μετάφραση: Ότι θα δίνουμε το 100% του εαυτού μας. Πραγματικά αγαπάμε αυτό που κάνουμε και όταν είμαστε πάνω στην σκηνή θα δουν όλοι τι σημαίνει αυτό. Για εμάς αυτή η μουσική είναι και η ίδια μας η ζωή.

13. Do you have a favorite song to perform live, and if so, why?

I believe it's "Fly Like an Eagle." The years marked by the challenges of Covid reminded us all of the profound significance of freedom. It became clear that without it, no person can genuinely live their life. This is why we hold the song dear as one of our favorites.

Ελληνική μετάφραση: Πιστεύω ότι είναι το Fly Like A Eagle. Τα χρόνια του Covid είδαμε όλοι τη σημαίνει να χάνεις την ελευθεριά σου. Χωρίς αυτήν κανένας άνθρωπος δεν μπορεί να ζήσει πραγματικά την ζωή του. Γι’ αυτό το θεωρούμε και ένα από τα αγαπημένα μας κομμάτια.

14. How do you feel about the current state of the heavy metal music scene?

 

Unfortunately, we are not pleased with it. There are bands that genuinely play Metal, but regrettably, some are being promoted that have no connection to this genre of music.

Ελληνική μετάφραση: Sorry αλλά δεν μας αρέσει καθόλου. Υπάρχουν μπάντες οι οποίες παίζουν γνήσιο Metal αλλά δυστυχώς προωθούνται κάποιοι οι οποίοι είναι άσχετοι με αυτήν την μουσική.

15. If given the opportunity to share the stage or have a renowned heavy metal musician as a guest, who would be your top choice, and what specific qualities or contributions do you admire about them that make them your ideal collaborator?

Great question! If I had to choose, I'd say Motorhead, but with Lemmy no longer with us, Judas Priest takes the lead. These top-tier bands have not only brought the music but also defined the image, fashion, and lifestyle synonymous with Metal. It's our admiration for these aspects that fuels our desire to play alongside them.

Ελληνική μετάφραση: Ωραία ερώτηση. Θα έλεγα με τους Motorhead αλλά αφού έχει φύγει ο Lemmy τότε οι Judas Priest. Τι να πεις για τέτοιες κορυφαίες μπάντες. Έφεραν τον ήχο, το image, τον ρουχισμό αλλά και τον τρόπο ζωής που σου δίνει η Metal μουσική. Γιαυτό τους αγαπάμε και θέλουμε να παίξουμε μαζί τους.

16. How do you think your music has evolved since the formation of the band?

As I mentioned, I'm not a fan of it. Metal is meant for the streets, not living rooms. While there are undoubtedly skilled musicians, the quality of songwriting doesn't quite measure up. You can compare the albums we had in the 80s each year to what's being released now.

Ελληνική μετάφραση: Όπως είπα δεν μου αρέσει καθόλου. Το Metal ανήκει στους δρόμους και όχι στα σαλόνια. Μπορεί να υπάρχουν πολύ καλοί μουσικοί αλλά δεν γράφουν και τόσο καλά τραγούδια. Μπορείς να συγκρίνεις τι άλμπουμ είχαμε την δεκαετία το 80 κάθε χρόνια και τι άλμπουμ βγαίνουν τώρα.

17.  As we wrap up, is there a message or piece of advice you'd like to share with your fans or aspiring musicians who may be reading this interview.
