In every form of art and the same goes for heavy metal we don’t have virgin births. The story of the huge names of our music (BLACK SABBATH, JUDAS PRIEST, IRON MAIDEN, METALLICA etc) is the story of musicians that had the idea to take their influences and give them their own interpretation and this led them to create their own original sound. In our days, heavy metal is back and we witness new bands formed by young musicians release albums that have quality and offer us some really good moments, but the fact is that most of them don’t do anything more than copy the old school metal. I want to say that the new generation of metal fans need their own heroes and I think that TABERAH from Australia, who so far they have released 3 great studio albums, have the potential to be those heroes.

“Sinner’s Lament”, which is their third album, is a release that I listen to for a long time now and every time I listen to it I have the same reaction. It is like listening to it for the first time and it never tires me. On “Sinner’s Lament” TABERAH manage to balance their enthusiasm for traditional metal with a maturity that you find in bands that have a long career in the scene. Their influences are a lot like IRON MAIDEN (“The Final March of the Man”), ACCEPT and AC/DC (“Harlott”), PRIMAL FEAR and MANOWAR (at least this is the song “Crypt” how sounded to my ears) and many more. All these influences, though, are filtered through the personal interpretation of the band and because of that you have the sense that you listen to something original and not just another copycat.

The elements that make TABERAH stand out from other traditional heavy metal bands are the catchy melodies, the way they balance their melodies with their aggressive riffs (there are moments they flirt with thrash and speed metal), the insane screaming lead guitars and the solos that give to the songs more depth. Besides that one other thing that characterizes TABERAH are the melodic choruses that have a power metal touch and personally I find some similarities with the German power metal band ORDEN OGAN (they, too, have released a great album recently).

TABERAH is a band that has a plethora of influences which they use in such an imaginative way and because of that they offer us here an album that is fresh and surprises you in the way they structure their songs (this is something that you appreciate a lot if you listen to metal music for many years). All these resulted in me considering “Sinner’s Lament” as the best heavy metal album for this year and I also have the conviction that TABERAH should be the next big thing that traditional heavy metal scene needs. You must have this album.

Finally the album closes with a speed metal cover of the classic EAGLES song “Hotel California” and a hidden track which is a new version of the song “Requiem of the Damned” that was included for the first time in their debut release.
