BASTIAN – Back to the Roots Review

BASTIAN – Back to the Roots
Sliptrick Records
Third album from BASTIAN and I am really happy to present it to you once again.  I had the opportunity to follow the band’s steps from their debut album up to now and I can tell you that this record is similar to their previous 2 releases and yet shows a musical progress especially in the songwriting department.

For those of you who don’t know the band let me tell you a few things about it. The band musically moves between the 70’s hard rock and heavy metal sound and from the first listening you will realize that Ritchie Blackmore is a major influence of Sebastiano Conti (the guitarist and mastermind of BASTIAN). Another influence for the band is of course Ronnie James Dio.

In their new album which has the title “Back to the Roots” the band does exactly that. The traditional heavy metal elements are not so many and they give an emphasis on their hard rock elements. The RAINBOW feeling is obvious in most of the songs, but you can also find references to bands like DEEP PURPLE, URIAH HEEP MSG, UFO and BLACK SABBATH. BASTIAN, however, manage to transform and own their influences and especially in this album they show that they have matured in the way they create their compositions. Also the lyrics are very interesting and talk about issues like war, dreams and one is inspired by the comic book hero Zagor (“Spirit with the Hatchet”).

Once again BASTIAN offer us an album that has quality and I think that they can’t leave indifferent any fan of the hard rock and heavy metal sound.  Also in this album some great musicians like Apollo Papathanasio on vocals and Vinny Appice on drums participate.
