Heavy metal music has a lot of
genres and from time to time some of them draw more attention from the listeners.
This usually happens because some new bands and good works pop out. Folk metal,
after the rise of bands like KORPIKLAANI, ALESTORM, TURISAS and so many more
has earned the attention of the metal fans. Also this success led to a debate with
some, who are against, claim that the new folk metal has become more pop oriented
with some catchy melodies and choruses that you might like the moment you
listen to them, but you easily forget. I personally like some of the above mentioned
bands, but truth be told I have learned the folk metal sound through SKYCLAD,
so I tend to recognize some of the suggestions of the opposite side as right.
Personally I prefer my folk metal to have variety and not to be just for party
and beer drinking.
OPEN
ACCESS from Poland, whose EP I have already presented, is a nice surprise for
me and in a way they are not the ordinary folk metal band that we are used to lately.
Here in their debut album they continue to deliver a sound that balances
between folk and traditional heavy and power metal tunes. The violins along
with the guitars play a major role which gives character to the songs. So here
you will have the chance to listen to songs that offer a variety of emotions
that range from melancholic to high energetic and party tunes. The interesting thing
though with these guys is that they never choose the easy solutions to create a
song. Of course the folk metal clichés are here, but the band gives them to the
listener in an original or fresh way if you prefer. Based on my own experience
the band reminded me sometimes of groups like JAG PANZER, KNIGHT ERRANT and
SKYCLAD. Finally one other thing that makes OPEN ACCESS distinguish is the use
of female vocals that give a dramatic touch to the compositions.
So,
if you want to listen to a folk metal band that is above the average folk metal
bands these days, then you have to check these guys out.
