MOTELNOIRE – MotelNoire review

MOTELNOIRE – MotelNoire
MAP
MOTELNOIRE come from Italy although their band name comes from the French language which means dark/black hotel. It is an intriguing and dark name that someone can relate to horror fiction. After all these you might think that we have to do with a dark metal band, but these guys claim to play pop-rock music. So the question here is how dark can pop – rock sound?
THE COVER: I think that it describes in the best possible way the name of the band and the album title too. It is the picture of a long hall which you can find in every hotel around the world. This one though looks a bit dirty and dark. Actually it is a picture that you can see in a horror film. Personally speaking it brought to my mind the movie “The Shining”.
MUSICAL STYLE: Usually bands that play pop – rock music tend to be more commercial oriented which means they give more space to catchy pop-ish elements and drop here and there some rock elements. MOTELNOIRE though differ on that. Actually their sound is well balanced between the pop and rock elements and they manage to sound really heavy and sometimes dark for the standards of their sound.
CONCLUSION: I don’t know if there are many people in heavy metal that are into pop – rock music, but I think that this is an album that has good compositions, it is well performed and of course it has variety. Also it sounds modern and yet has this 80’s feeling too. Finally the use of the Italian language gives to the album a more exotic touch (except for those who are from Italy or can speak the language).
