Heavy metal is often a family business. I mean there are so many bands, some of which are well known which have been formed by members of the same family. Even our webzine is a family business after all since my sister and I have created it and keep it running for so many years. This, however, is something that I meet for the first time in the band BLACKSMITH LEGACY. Let me be more specific about it. The band formed in 2009 and it is a band that was created by the collaboration of father and son, Mr. Torgil Sturesson and Martin Sturesson, who are the constant members of the band from the start.

BLACKSMITH LEGACY released an album in 2013 under the title “Let the Game Begin” and in 2015 they released this EP which I am about to present to you.

The band from the start wanted to play traditional heavy metal that draws inspiration from the 80’s, which no matter what you believe was the most creative era for this genre. The sound of the band actually is European metal oriented and balances somewhere between the 80’s U.K. metal sound as it was mainly expressed by bands like JUDAS PRIEST and SAXON and the German sound in the way it was crafted by ACCEPT. There are, though, some U.S. metal elements as well. The four songs that are included here move on mid tempos with only exception the song “Saints and Sinner” which is melodic and up tempo and has a HELLOWEEN, early PRETTY MAIDS and HAMMERFALL feeling. The magic of this band is the way it composes simple catchy riffs mixed with memorable melodies and lead guitar parts. There is also a song that you can call epic metal and it pays its respects to the MANOWAR legacy which is no other than the one that gave the title to this EP. Finally the production is really great because it is dynamic and clear and helps you listen to all the instruments (actually it is the kind of production I like).

In an era where everyone tries to copy the 80’s and play as fast or as loud as they can, BLACKSMITH LEGACY are here to remind us that heavy metal is all about passion and true dedication to this sound and not a competition. Personally speaking I have to say that BLACKSMITH LEGACY is the kind of band I enjoy and consider they guarantee the future of this sound, because they are inspired by the 80’s, but they don’t copy it. They actually dare to create their own compositions. I would really love to listen to more music from these guys.
