SUN, RAIN IN LIFE – 96/4 review

SUN, RAIN IN LIFE – 96/4
Independent
In the 90’s the grunge rock sound knew great success all over the world. It was a genre that started back in the mid 80’s in the United States from musicians that wanted to play something different from classic rock, heavy metal and punk rock. I think the album that brought this genre to people’s attention is the one entitled “Nevermind” and was released by NIRVANA. It is obvious that people back then wanted to listen to something that was more radio friendly and yet dark and revolutionary and I think these were the elements they found in this genre. SUN, RAIN IN LIFE from Greece now were formed back in that era under the name TEENAGE ANGST and now under a new band name they release their debut album which I am about to present to you here.
THE COVER: The cover is a play of dark and light colors which actually fits to the name of the band and the emotions that they create with their music. As you can see it shows the earth from space and behind our planet the sun that starts to rise.
MUSICAL STYLE:  Although in my teen grunge rock was huge, somehow I never felt attracted to it. It was the time that I was discovering the heavy metal sound. So, I will try to do my best here but hope the fans and the band won’t hold any grudge against me for any mistakes I might make because it won’t happen on purpose. Well, SUN, RAIN IN LIFE belong to the grunge rock sound and you can say that they have also some alternative rock elements. Their sound is heavy with lots of melodies and passes to the listener a feeling of nostalgia and melancholy. I think, based on my poor experience that the band is definitely influenced by NIRVANA and their sound holds a lot of similarities to groups like ALICE IN CHAINS and SMASHING PUMPKINS. SUN, RAIN IN LIFE manage to create an album that brings memories from the past days of the grunge/alternative rock sound, but it doesn’t stand there. It is a vivid and fresh album that in a way reinvents the genre and gives it a contemporary touch.
CONCLUSION: “96/4” is a debut album and yet it is an album that only a band with lots of experience could create. They also have the necessary enthusiasm of the new band and the most important thing is that they manage to combine the past of the grunge sound with the modern rock tendencies. If you are into this kind, you might want to check this release out.
