NORTHWINDS – Eternal Winter review

 NORTHWINDS – Eternal Winter
Black Widow Records
NORTHWINDS must be one of the oldest French bands since they were formed in 1987 under the name R.I.P. and continue their path up to now. They are one of those hidden gems that aficionados of the style mainly know and it’s a real shame cause they deserve both our support and recognition since they know how to write killer music.

The band moves on doom metal paths, but not the way most doom metal bands sound nowadays… On the contrary NORTHWINDS have chosen to follow and serve the early period of doom metal as it first appeared in the 70s and delivered by the mighty BLACK SABBATH. So, their style moves closely to the sound of the first two BLACK SABBATH releases; this is the kind of doom metal I’m talking about, and they enrich it with progressive rock tunes as well bringing to mind early RAINBOW, WITCHFINDER GENERAL and the likes. “Eternal Winter” is the band’s fifth studio release and taking into account the years of experience they have then you should expect a killer album that will remind you of the early era of our beloved music. Since I’m a huge BLACK SABBATH fan and I think the first two albums are some of the brightest jewels our music has to showcase it goes without saying that I truly, deeply loved and enjoyed this album. “Eternal Winter” has it all… catchy tunes, killer riffs, beautiful melodies and great vocals to accompany them. Plus it has a very good, clear production and a cover of another favourite band of mine; the album closes with BLITZKRIEG’s “Inferno” so by all means dig into this! You won’t regret it!!!
