STORMLURKER – A Dark Formation

It
is proven by life that creative people can’t be restricted in only one specific
thing; instead they search to channel their creativity in many different ways.
I think that my friend Deryck whom for the first time I met with NORSELAW is
such a person. Actually he is a talented and well skilled guitarist, but also a
composer that dares to improvise with the traditional forms of heavy metal
without getting out of the fields of this sound whose also is a big fan of.
Now, having next to him Stan Martell on the bass and Austin Lane on drums he
formed the band STORMLURKER and “Dark Formation” is their debut release and an
introduction to their music.
THE COVER: When you have the title “A Dark Formation”, then you need a cover that can visualize these words and I think that Joel Sanchez Rosales the guy who made the painting for STORMLURKER did a very good job. Actually he uses dark colors and creates a dark and menacing atmosphere. On the painting you can see a place that looks like a swamp and in front of it lies a gutted human figure that is alive. Yep it looks like a zombie. Also you can see some other zombies on the background and an evil looking crocodile. Also in the front of our zombie you can see a lot of human skulls. Finally on the top of the cover you can see a gothic looking castle and a full moon on the rise. It is really a beautiful cover with lot of details and could easily be a cover for a horror movie book or even a poster for a horror film.

MUSICAL STYLE: I think
that you all know NORSELAW, at least the ones that read our webzine constantly.
It is a band that in my opinion continues the legacy of the U.S. epic metal
with some innovations that make their whole sound unique and recognizable.
STORMLURKER now move on a different musical path than NORSELAW and yet they are
still in the traditional metal sound. Actually, the sound of this band can be
described as a combination between the grooves of good old BLACK SABBATH and
the riffs of the bay area thrash metal scene. All these are underlined with
great shredding and technical lead parts that don’t tire at all, but they spice
up the whole album. This time also Deryck (vocals/guitars) uses harsh vocals
that actually fit perfectly to the aggressive sound of the band. Based on my
experience I would describe their sound as technical thrash metal with strong
heavy metal influences. Also one other thing that impressed me is that Deryck’s
guitar playing is easily recognizable no matter what the kind of metal he plays
is and this is something we find very rarely in our days.
CONCLUSION: “A
Dark Formation” is not an album that you can easily digest and forget about. It
is a demanding release that the more time you give to it the more it will pay
you back. Personally speaking I think it is an excellent sample of modern
technical thrash metal with roots deep in the 80’s sound. It is an album that I
can recommend without hesitation to fans of bands like CORONER and DEATH.
