MY REFUGE – A Matter of Supremacy review

MY REFUGE – A Matter of Supremacy
Bakerteam Records
MY REFUGE is a band from Italy. They were formed in 2010 and they have already released 2 EPs in 2010 and 2013. “A Matter of Supremacy” is their debut full length album and it was released in June 2015. I am really interested in finding new bands and when these guys asked me to listen to their album and write my impressions about it, I could not refuse. So here we are…
THE COVER: My first impression of the cover is that the dark red or you can say the crimson color dominates on the background. Besides that, in front you can see two human bodies and a human skull with feathered wings. It is a dark themed cover and also a drawing that you can see on a tattoo. This painting might not give you a hint about the musical style of the band, but I think that in a way it represents their lyrics dealing with introspective issues, up to more social issues and current affairs.
MUSICAL STYLE: It is hard to fully describe their sound and put them under a tag and get over with them. The sure thing is that they have a modern production and also show an intention towards melody. I think that the band combines in its sound traditional Euro power metal with modern melodic thrash metal elements and also they have some progressive metal structures that give to their sound an adventurous touch. The band manages to combine all these elements in a very natural and capable way. Personally, without implying that they copy, they reminded me of bands like ORDEN OGAN and NOSTRADAMEUS (latest era).
CONCLUSION: MY REFUGE is a band that takes the traditional heavy/power metal sound and introduces to it modern elements. They are quite good at what they do and they really offer an album pleasant to listen to and with a variety of sounds and emotions.
