LUCUMA - Destruye La Ciudad Psicológica review

LUCUMA - Destruye La Ciudad Psicológica
Independent
Lucuma is a word that in Greek makes you think of a sweet full of sugar that we have here and it is very tasty (looks a bit like a donut). The word though also applies to an eatable product of the nature. Lucuma is a subtropical fruit native to the Andean valleys. I believe that LUCUMA who come from Argentina have taken their name from this fruit. All this talking about food might open your appetite, but we are here to talk about music and I am here to present to you the sophomore release of the band that has the title “Destruye La Ciudad Psicológica” which in English means destroy the psychological city. I think it is a bizarre and yet interesting title.
THE COVER: It is a very detailed painting where colors like blue, green and brown dominate. It will need more than a few lines to fully describe the cover and I am not sure that I will succeed it even then. On the center you can see the face of a beautiful lady whose eyes look melancholic. On the right you can see a tree which looks like a woman carrying a baby on the womb. On the left you can see a cyborg man flying. In the whole cover you can see symbols of life and death. The cover probably symbolizes the circle of life, but you can give your own interpretation. The fact though is that it is a very beautiful cover.
MUSICAL STYLE: It is obvious that LUCUMA is a strange band, but it is also a band that makes music that applies to everyone. They might have progressive structures in their compositions, but you don’t need to have a deep knowledge of the music in order to enjoy this album. LUCUMA musically balance between the old 80’s and 70’s sound, but they also have modern elements. It is obvious that the band’s influences come from the grooves of BLACK SABBATH, the lead guitar parts of RAINBOW and of course the melodic tendencies of IRON MAIDEN, but next to them you can find out a personal musical view that is close (not similar) to bands like TOOL and MASTODON.
CONCLUSION: LUCUMA achieve to make an amalgam of the classic and modern hard rock and heavy metal sound and although they have complicated and sometimes even psychedelic structures (like HAWKWIND) they manage to sound pretty straight forward and catchy. I think that LUCUMA is a band that stands out in our days because they don’t just copy the glory of the past, but they actually give to their influences their own musical aspect.
