CHILDREN OF SERAPH - Children of Seraph EP review

CHILDREN OF SERAPH - Children of Seraph EP
Independent
CHILDREN OF SERAPH is a new band that was formed in Tacoma Washington (U.S.A.) in 2013 by the guitarist Nathanyel Nieves. The band started as a cover glam metal band, but very soon they realized that they were doing something wrong (just kidding) and searched a musical style of expression that seemed more proper to their taste. This kind of genre is the power metal sound and this is in a few lines how their first EP, which is also the first official release of the band, was created.
THE COVER: As a band that has a taste for fantasy and of course a name that refers to an angelic legion, they have chosen the right cover which by the way looks very cool. You can see a female angel figure holding a sword and riding a tiger with blood red teeth (maybe there is here a reference to DIO’s “Holy Diver”). It is by all means a proper heavy metal cover for a band that as they mention on their bio sheet draw influence from the world of video games.
MUSICAL STYLE: The band is clear on what they are playing and this is no other than power metal which draws influences from the 80’s heavy metal sound, but they also have a contemporary production. The band really emphasizes on leads and solos which are quite technical, but due to the young of their age they sometimes overdo it. Their singer has potential, but needs to work a bit more. There are moments that his voice is ideal for the songs, but there were also moments that left me with the feeling that he could do more. Actually this release has divided me in half. From the four compositions that are included here two of them sound great and I mean the ones that have the title “Metal Face” and “Sleeping Song” (this one has an epic feeling) and the other two showed me the weakness of the band which I am sure they can work out since they are very talented. As of how exactly they sound, I think that they balance between the U.S. and European power metal sound.
CONCLUSION: CHILDREN OF SERAPH is a new band that has talent and skill and with their EP they left me in general with a positive impression, but they also need to work a bit more in order to improve and learn that sometimes less is more. I am sure that they will give us even better things in the future and I would be more than glad to present them.
