COLOSSUS – Drunk on Blood and the Sepulcher of the Mirror Warlocks
Killer Metal Records
COLOSSUS is an ancient Greek word and the origin of this word is really unknown. Some scientists believe that it is a borrowed word from the people who lived in the Aegean Sea before the invasion of the Ancient Greek tribes. The meaning of the word means a huge size human both literally or metaphorically and it is also used as a reference to the huge statue that was on the entrance of the port of the Island of Rhodes which now is lost. Also there are quite a few bands with the name COLOSSUS and all of them come from the U.S.A., but here I will present to you a traditional heavy metal band and their sophomore album. Actually this release is the compilation of their 2 EPs under the titles “Drunk on Blood” (2009) and “…And the Sepulcher of the Mirror Warlocks” (2012) that the band has released on its own. So let me tell you my impressions after listening to this release.
THE COVER: It is an original cover and something that you rarely see in our days. It is obviously made by hand and reminds me of the covers of the 80’s metal bands (like OMEN). The cover art depicts a huge barbarian that smashes the heads of warriors with his mace (which looks like a dice that is used in the RPG games). I think that the cover fits to the lyrical themes of this album since the band draws inspiration mostly from heroic fantasy and science fiction.
MUSICAL STYLE: No one can deny that the N.W.O.B.H.M. sound was a major influence for all the traditional heavy metal bands and in specific for bands like IRON MAIDEN (who no matter what you believe are the leaders of this genre). Another influential band is metal gods JUDAS PRIEST. COLOSSUS, having in mind the teachings of the above mentioned bands, crafts a sound that is surely influenced by them, but also has its own identity. I can’t explain the reason why, but COLOSSUS are blessed with the talent and the ability to create a sound that has its own identity and it is easy to recognize and that is a huge thing in my opinion.
COMPOSITIONS: The album includes 11 compositions that will travel you to worlds of heroic fantasy and to the future where mankind fights for survival in the new frontiers. As I said their influences come from IRON MAIDEN and JUDAS PRIEST, but they do compose their music in their own way. I think that you can also compare their sound to bands like SLOUGH FEG, OMEN and BIBLE OF THE DEVIL.
CONCLUSION: I think that the fans of traditional heavy and epic metal will find here another band to love. In my opinion COLOSSUS are worth your attention since they have the ideas and the way to craft them into good songs and above all because they are a band with personality.
