This is the 100^th release for Pure Steel Records and in order to celebrate this they have decided to give this number to the debut album of the young German band PROWLER which comes from the same home state of the label (Saxony). It is true that Pure Steel Records through the years of its existence gave us a lot of new interesting bands to listen to and so I was really curious about them too. So, let me tell you my opinion about these guys.

THE COVER: It looks old fashioned and great too. This is the kind of cover art that you expect to see from a traditional heavy metal band or even from a power metal band and actually fits to their sound and of course to the album title. It depicts a skeleton stallion that is ready to run over some demonic creatures. Also on the background you can see an exotic tower and dragons flying in the sky. Yep, all the beautiful clichés that you expect to see on a cover of a heavy metal album. 

MUSICAL STYLE: PROWLER might be of a young age and probably they haven’t been born in the 80’s, but they really sound like a band made by veteran heavy metal musicians that comes from that era. They do have, though, the enthusiasm of a young band. So, to make it clear to you PROWLER are deeply influenced by the N.W.O.B.H.M. sound and the British metal sound, but they also have some German metal touches too.

COMPOSITIONS: The album consists of 9 compositions which carry on the legacy of bands like SAXON, IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST, GRIM REAPER and there are even times they reminded me of RUNNING WILD too. As you can see their sound is old school and if someone did not tell you they are a new band you would easily think they are an 80’s metal band. The compositions consist of catchy melodies and a dynamic rhythm section which underlines them. The band is quite skillful, but uses its skills only in a way that serves the compositions. Actually I think they keep it simple and keep it true. This is their philosophy and the way they create their songs and surely this pays off.

CONCLUSION: You won’t find here something innovative or progressive, but you will surely find some good old school heavy metal tunes and a lot of good moments. For me this is enough to make me buy an album and actually this is what I seek from a traditional heavy metal band. If you think the same with me, then you will enjoy this release.
