DARKTHRONE, Soulside Journey (1991)

Εναρκτήριο λάκτισμα. 

Οι Νορβηγοί, πασίγνωστοι πλέον θιασώτες κάθε σκοτεινού και ακραίου ήχου, όπως το Black Metal, αλλά και το Heavy Metal εσχάτως, καθώς και το Metal Punk, στο πρώτο τους ραντεβού με τη μοίρα. Ένα αμιγώς death metal σύνολο κομματιών, αφού το δεύτερο κύμα του Black Metal, που ειδικά στη Νορβηγία θα ξεκινούσε σιγά σιγά τότε, ήθελε ακόμη να τους παρασύρει και αυτούς για περίπου ένα χρόνο. Το υλικό αυτό της αρχικής σύνθεσης με τους Fenriz, Zephyrus, Dag Nielsen και τον Nocturno Culto, προϋποθέτει ότι αγαπάς τον ήχο της Φλόριντα (Death, Morbid Angel, Obituary κ.τ.λ.) για να μπεις εύκολα στη λογική του. Αλλιώς, το προσπερνάς, και προχωράς κατευθείαν στο «A Blaze in the Northern Sky», ένα χρόνο μετά, για τον ήχο του Black Metal. 

Οπότε, κρίνοντας την εποχή 1988-1990, όταν γράφτηκε, αυτό είναι ένα πολύ καλό death metal άλμπουμ, και τα τραγούδια «Sunrise Over Locus Mortis», «Soulside Journey», «Accumulation of Generalisation», «Neptune Towers», «Grave With a View», «Iconoclasm Sweeps Cappadocia» (οι επαφές με Rotting Christ, Necromantia και άλλα σχήματα του ελληνικού Black ήχου είχαν εδώ κάποια επιρροή;), «Norths Solent Whispers», «The Watchtower» και «Eon» είναι μια χαρά κομμάτια.

Kick-off. 

The Norwegians, now renowned supporters of every dark and extreme sound, such as Black Metal, but also recently Heavy Metal, as well as Metal Punk, in their first encounter with destiny. A purely death metal set of songs, since the second wave of Black Metal, which especially in Norway was just beginning to emerge at the time, still wanted to pull them in for about a year. This material from their initial lineup—featuring Fenriz, Zephyrus, Dag Nielsen, and Nocturno Culto—presupposes an appreciation for the Florida sound (Death, Morbid Angel, Obituary, etc.) to easily get into the vibe. Otherwise, you'd just pass it by and move straight on to “A Blaze in the Northern Sky”, a year later, for the Black Metal sound.

So, judging by the era 1988-1990 when it was written, this is a very good death metal album, and tracks like “Sunrise Over Locus Mortis,” “Soulside Journey,” “Accumulation of Generalisation,” “Neptune Towers,” “Grave With a View,” “Iconoclasm Sweeps Cappadocia” (did contacts with Rotting Christ, Necromantia, and other Greek Black sound bands influence this?), “Norths Solent Whispers,” “The Watchtower,” and “Eon” are solid songs.
