SOCIAL SCREAM, ΔΕΙΝΟΝ ΕΣΤΙ (2022)

Η περιφέρεια έχει αναδείξει κρυφούς άσσους. 

Το συγκρότημα, με καταγωγή από τη Σπάρτη, κυκλοφορεί το πέμπτο άλμπουμ του από το 2008, παρακαλώ! Είναι πραγματικά παρήγορο να βλέπουμε το ελληνικό underground να σηκώνει το κεφάλι του με σχήματα σαν κι αυτό. Μια σύγχρονη προσέγγιση στο πιο παραδοσιακό Heavy/Speed Metal, με καλή παραγωγή και στιχουργικό περιεχόμενο βαθιά «χωμένο» στο σήμερα, περισσότερο παρά στο φανταστικό — αν και ο κόσμος της φαντασίας τελικά δεν διαφέρει και τόσο από την πραγματικότητα πλέον.

Στο οπισθόφυλλο αφιερώνουν το CD σε όλους όσοι έπεσαν, χάθηκαν, πέθαναν ή έγιναν βορρά στον μηχανισμό, ως αποτέλεσμα του παγκόσμιου πειράματος υποταγής και εξαναγκασμού που έμεινε στην ιστορία ως Covid‑19. Απειλητικά riffs, κάπως ασφυκτική ατμόσφαιρα (όπως είναι αναμενόμενο με βάση τα παραπάνω χαρακτηριστικά) και, χωρίς να το έχω ψάξει στο προφίλ τους, συμπεραίνω ότι ο Power & Speed Metal ήχος από σχήματα της αμερικανικής τεχνοτροπίας πρέπει να έχει παίξει μεγάλο ρόλο ως επιρροή για τους τέσσερις μουσικούς: Βλάσης Διαμαντάκος (φωνή, ρυθμική κιθάρα), Αλέξανδρος Οικονόμου (μπάσο), Κίμωνας Αλέξανδρος (κιθάρα) και Φοίβος Ανδριόπουλος (ντραμς).

Αν είναι να ξεχωρίσω κάποια από τα οκτώ κομμάτια, αυτά θα ήταν τα Inmates, Frozen in Time, Exagellos, No Pain for the Dead, Evilvin, το έντεκα λεπτών έπος Lost Angel Falls, ενώ το Luna Dark θα έλεγα πως αποτελεί το απάνθισμα του CD.

The periphery has revealed some hidden aces.

The band, hailing from Sparta, is now releasing its fifth album since 2008, no less! It’s genuinely heartening to see the Greek underground lifting its head with acts like this one. A modern take on traditional Heavy/Speed Metal, with solid production and lyrics firmly rooted in the present rather than the fantastical — though, truth be told, the world of fantasy doesn’t seem all that different from reality anymore.

On the back cover, they dedicate the CD to all those who fell, were lost, died, or were consumed by the machine as a result of the global experiment in submission and coercion that went down in history as Covid‑19. Threatening riffs, a somewhat suffocating atmosphere (as one would expect given the above), and — without having checked their profile — I’d say the Power & Speed Metal sound of American‑style bands must have played a major role in shaping the influences of the four musicians: Vlasis Diamantakos (vocals, rhythm guitar), Alexandros Oikonomou (bass), Kimonas Alexandros (guitar), and Phoivos Andriopoulos (drums).

If I had to single out a few of the eight tracks, they would be Inmates, Frozen in Time, Exagellos, No Pain for the Dead, Evilvin, the eleven‑minute epic Lost Angel Falls, while Luna Dark could be described as the album’s crowning moment.

KIMAERA - Solitary Impact

After approximately four years since the release of their debut Ebony Veiled, KIMAERA returned with their sophomore full-length Solitary Impact, released via Stygian Crypt Productions. The album presents a solid and immersive take on atmospheric doom/death metal, marked by a strong sense of mood and careful layering.

Hailing from Lebanon, KIMAERA’s background inevitably adds an extra dimension to the release, highlighting the dedication required to sustain a metal band and continue releasing albums under challenging circumstances. Musically, Solitary Impact combines slow, doom-laden passages with death metal elements, enriched by oriental influences and symphonic arrangements that give the album a distinct character.

The use of ethereal female vocals and violin contributes to a more varied and textured sound, enhancing the album’s emotional depth without overwhelming its core heaviness. While KIMAERA do not attempt to reinvent the genre, they deliver a cohesive and well-crafted work that demonstrates both maturity and confidence in their musical direction.

Fans of atmospheric and melodic doom/death metal—particularly listeners familiar with bands such as Anathema, Amorphis, Haggard, Orphaned Land, and Lake of Tears—are likely to find Solitary Impact a release worth exploring.
